Foundation for International Education in Neurological Surgery (FIENS)
FIENS mission is to improve the care of individuals with neurological disease throughout the world by supporting education in neurosurgery, particularly via partnerships between established and emerging neurosurgical programs. They provide hands-on training and education to neurosurgeons around the world. Their volunteer neurosurgeons and personnel spend months on-site, teaching techniques to local neurosurgeons and setting up neurosurgery residency programs. Working side-by-side with neurosurgeons in low-resourced countries is the best way to impart this knowledge. Passing this knowledge forward truly helps these surgeons and their patients in their country.
They accomplish this through their signature programs – The FIENS Clack Fellowships, The FIENS Bassett Fellowships, Virtual Visiting Professor webinars, on-site bootcamps, and a robust volunteer program. In October FIENS announced two new Clack Family Fellows Dr. Barry Louncény Fatoumata and Dr. Abdisamed Abdi Ali. As the 2022 Clack Family Fellowship awardees, they will receive funds to continue their neurosurgical education in their home countries.
Dr. Peter Mushenya of Zambia recently completed his FIENS Bassett fellowship at Hospital Santa Maria della Misericordia in Udine and Careggi University Hospital in Florence under the guidance of Dr. Barbara Cappelletto . Intersurgeon
InterSurgeon offers an interactive website designed to bring individuals and organizations together in partnerships to improve surgical care globally. InterSurgeon’s mission is to increase global collaborations in surgery, obstetrics, trauma, and anesthesia improving surgical capacity in low- and middle-income countries. It is an inclusive and collaborative global community actively improving surgical care.
Through their membership-based platform, they are opening doors for all members of the surgical team and other stakeholders to contribute to strengthening surgical care worldwide. This is done by sourcing expertise from previously untapped resources and creating a cycle of learning and education that empowers providers to create their own opportunities. InterSurgeon members use their website to create offers and requests to give or ask for assistance and/or resources.

Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery (GICS)
GICS is working to build safe and effective surgical care for all of the world’s children — no exceptions. GICS passionately believes that every child must have access to safe surgical care. Their mission is to define and promote optimal resources for children’s surgery in resource-poor regions. They do this by engaging with providers of all disciplines of children’s surgical care around the world.
GICS has over 1100 members from 66 countries. Members are physicians, surgeons, nurses, medical students, and other practitioners who are all committed to improving outcomes for children’s surgery.
With over 66% of the world’s children lacking access to surgical care and an estimated 143 million more surgeons needed each year in Low-and-Middle-Income Countries (LMIC), GICS has a lot to accomplish. Their members work towards addressing these disturbing facts through active working groups and committees.
GICS members work diligently to create educational content. One way they do this is through their Virtual Grand Rounds series. Recent webinars in the series included a session on Wilms Tumor and Anorectal Malformations both of which offered continuing education credits to those in attendance.
