At Ohana One, we believe that quality healthcare is a right, not a privilege, no matter where you live. Today, we’re excited to share an inspiring story that reflects the incredible impact of global collaboration: the journey of Erick, a resilient young man from Honduras.
Erick has faced immense challenges in his life. Diagnosed with Escobar Syndrome, a rare condition that includes severe scoliosis and multiple pterygium (web-like folds of skin), Erick lives with numerous physical complications, including restricted growth, joint contractures, abnormal facial features, ptosis, and other structural deformities.
To improve his quality of life, Erick needs a specialized traction surgery to prevent compression of his vital organs and stretch his spine in preparation for a final, corrective surgery. However, limited resources and expertise in Honduras left Erick with few options. Thanks to his courage and the support of the Ohana One community, new hope has emerged.
We are thrilled to announce that on September 23, Erick will undergo traction surgery at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, under the skilled care of pediatric orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Kenneth Illingsworth. This surgery represents more than just a medical procedure; it opens a new chapter for Erick, full of possibilities that once seemed out of reach.
A special thank you goes to Cristina Farrut, our dedicated Mission Manager, who connected Erick’s family with the right team of doctors. Her commitment to ensuring Erick receives the highest quality care truly embodies the spirit of Ohana One.
Erick’s story is a powerful reminder of the transformative impact of accessible surgical care. Behind every procedure lies a journey of resilience, hope, and the promise of a brighter future. As he prepares for surgery, we invite you to keep Erick in your thoughts and prayers. Your support makes a meaningful difference.
Stay connected with us for updates on Erick’s progress. Together, we can continue bridging the gap between those in need and the life-saving care they deserve. Thank you for being an essential part of the Ohana One family and for making stories like Erick’s possible.
Update November 1, 2024: Erik’s surgery went well and he is in great spirits as he enters this next chapter of his life. He is recovering well and we are so glad to be able to provide this life-saving medical care.
