For Dr. David Kulber, co-founder of Ohana One, a pivotal connection to one of his favorite sci-fi universes—Star Trek—has shaped not only his career but also the impact of his organization. Dr. Kulber had the unique honor of caring for one of the head writers behind Star Trek: Discovery. This experience held particular significance for Dr. Kulber, a lifelong Star Trek enthusiast with a deep admiration for Dr. Leonard “Bones” McCoy, the beloved medical officer from the original Star Trek series. In fact, before starting medical school, Dr. Kulber had the incredible opportunity to meet DeForest Kelley, the actor who portrayed Dr. McCoy. The connection felt destined.
One of Dr. Kulber’s favorite episodes from the original Star Trek series, “The City on the Edge of Forever,” beautifully juxtaposes traditional medicine with advanced technology. The episode reflects a combination of humanity and ingenuity—values that have deeply influenced Dr. Kulber’s approach to both his medical career and Ohana One’s mission to improve global surgical care through technology.
During one of their conversations, Dr. Kulber shared with the Star Trek: Discovery writer his playful dream: the idea of a character named “Dr. Kulber” on the bridge of the starship Discovery. To his surprise, after the series was filmed, the writer returned with thrilling news. “I am grateful for all you have done for me,” the writer said. “We took your idea one step further—the new doctor on Discovery is named Dr. Culber.” Dr. Kulber was ecstatic, particularly when he discovered that the character wasn’t a Klingon but a tall, handsome human! The spelling of “Culber” was adjusted slightly to prevent any legal entanglements, and to avoid confusion with the real Dr. Kulber. And thus, a little bit of his story became part of the Star Trek universe.
In true Dr. McCoy fashion, Dr. Kulber would likely agree: “Damn it, Jim, I’m a doctor, not an engineer!”
The story doesn’t end there. In an exciting twist of fate, the Roddenberry Foundation, created by Star Trek’s visionary creator Gene Roddenberry, is now a proud supporter of Ohana One. The foundation’s commitment to innovative solutions aligns perfectly with Ohana One’s mission to leverage cutting-edge technology to improve medical outcomes worldwide. This partnership has truly brought Star Trek‘s futuristic vision into present-day medical practice, allowing Ohana One to carry on the legacy of blending humanity and ingenuity—just like Dr. McCoy and Dr. Kulber.
Together, Dr. Kulber, Ohana One, and the Roddenberry Foundation are boldly going where no one has gone before in the world of medical care.
