Ohana One is set to further transform global surgical training with the launch of our groundbreaking OO App, anticipated in the second quarter of 2025. This app is thoughtfully designed to fortify connections between surgeons and support healthcare professionals, especially in remote and underserved regions. It represents a significant stride toward fulfilling Ohana One’s mission of equipping global surgical teams with the essential tools and resources for success.
The conception of the OO App emerged from a collaboration between Dr. David Kulber, Ohana One’s co-founder and board president, and his colleague at Cedar Sinai, Dr. Edward Ray, during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. As surgeons who found themselves unable to operate, they seized this moment as an opportunity to develop an app that would further Ohana One’s mission, empowering surgeons to maintain communication, share data, and access vital resources despite geographical barriers. Initially, Dr. Ray was creating an app related to his practice but was inspired by Dr. Kulber to channel that vision into this project. The result is the OO App—a platform with the potential to unite surgeons worldwide and offer indispensable tools for collaboration and education. The app will also provide visibility into user data giving Ohana One the ability to seamlessly track data for analysis and impact reporting.
As Dr. Ray embarked on developing the Ohana One app in early 2021, the Ohana One team pinpointed the needs they aimed for the app to address. Their unified goal was to bolster relationships among surgeons, ensuring that surgical trainees, particularly those in remote locations, have consistent access to necessary resources. They envisioned the app as a conduit for mentee surgeons to connect directly with mentors and a platform for sharing data, ideas, training videos, and solutions.
The “OO” app will be a comprehensive platform for surgeons, allowing users to track educational milestones, access the Ohana One Video Library, and explore live surgeries and academic discussions. It features medical note recording, WhatsApp integration, and tools for posting assistance requests, scheduling training, and accessing TeleVu and Help Lightning. Users can send HIPAA-compliant messages, join or create community groups, share multimedia, and search for providers by specialization, location, or organization—offering a rich, collaborative space for the surgical community.
Dr. Ray initially developed the app solo, and his efforts highlighted the app’s potential to surpass initial expectations. As this potential became evident, the vision of what could be achieved expanded, prompting the need for full-time developers. Dr. Ray and the Ohana One team took the bold step of engaging Bitmotive, a highly regarded and recommended app development firm.
The app is set to serve as a centralized hub where medical professionals can access case data, training videos, and other educational assets, making it the “front door” to all things Ohana One. By fostering global collaboration, the app amplifies Ohana One’s capacity to partner with NGOs, strategic allies, and surgical teams, thereby streamlining the collective efforts to deliver surgical training and support worldwide.
Ensuring global accessibility has been a paramount consideration in the app’s design. A standout feature includes the ability to schedule events that automatically adjust to the user’s local time zone, simplifying collaboration across diverse time zones.
